I can’t believed I haven’t heard about his movie till today, the actors, the cover, and the overall reputation was huge. This movie jumped out in my face when I saw it on sale in my local shop. It looked to me that this movie is going to be some what similar to Face Off, because the the cover have the same design. The casts is interesting, Anthony Hopkins, most famous for his role as Hannibal Lecter. Ryan Gosling, one of the biggest rising star of Hollywood, most for his good-looking, I think, his acting is adequate though. Also it say on every cover design, “I shot my wife, Prove it”. This quote got some senseless meaning to it, but it is very aggressive. The quote makes me think that this is going to be a movie that required you to take some notes, because it’s going to be a mind battle with Anthony Hopkins, and I don’t thinks it will end well for some people in the movie.
Wealthy, brilliant, and meticulous Ted Crawford, a structural engineer in Los Angeles, shoots his wife and entraps her lover. He signs a confession; at the arraignment, he asserts his rights to represent himself and asks the court to move immediately to trial. The prosecutor is Willy Beachum, a hotshot who’s soon to join a fancy civil-law firm, told by everyone it’s an open and shut case. Crawford sees Beachum’s weakness, the hairline fracture of his character: Willy’s a winner. The engineer sets in motion a clockwork crime with all the objects moving in ways he predicts.
This movie is great, it is riveting and tremendously portray. Generally, the movie really brings out the characteristic of every single character of the movie. It gives the audience a feeling of power, the audiences know about the murder, and how it is done, but yet the characters do not, it sounded like a kid acts, but through Anthony Hopkins performance, it turned into a seriously intense movie. Preferably, the main character is Ted Crawford and Willy Beachum, they deflect each other personalities, bringing us a furious battle without any weapons, just the human brain, this continue onslaught of a clever battle, requires the audience not to blink, to see what will Ted or Willy do to bring down each other. Ted and Beachum has the same level of wisdom, but Ted got his first move, now Willy got to retrace Ted step to charge him. The acting is phenomena, Anthony Hopkins brings that style of Hannibal Lecter to this movie, a very clever, and smart mouthed bad guy, he will always be my number 1 villains. Ryan Gosling also does a great job in this movie, his acting is nice, not too high, not too low, and it fits the movie perfectly. This is a all-around talking movie so no special effect is used, just the effect of making you think while watching. The mood of the movie is great, it is very dark, it gives the audiences the feeling of insecure, the feeling of something will happen but don’t know when. However the movie do get a bit boring in between, non-casual movie watcher will not be pleasant watching this, the pace is good for regular movie watcher though. This movie will bring you a very plausible day if you can get your hand on one of the copies.
This movie in general is a long movie, but a lot of scene stand out in the movie. About 10 minutes into the movie, Ted shoot his wife in the cheek and washed away the evidence. Knowledgeable watcher would know that, he washed his arm to remove any gun powders scattered around on it. He also know that,Rob, the man his wife is having affair with will arrived at the scene, since he’s a cop. Now this scene will make people feel really smart, we know what is going on but the character doesn’t, it creates a rise in the watcher chemistry to wait and see what will happen, lots of movie do this. Second scene that I like is when Willy get Rob up to be his witness, but got played by Ted, as he claimed that Rob is having affair with his wife, therefore making the judge believes that Rob is trying to frame Ted. Willy got put in a difficult situation. Third scene that I like is the scene where Willy and Ted first encountered each other face to face, it reminds me of the scene where Hannibal met Clarice for the first time, the only different between them is Ted and Willy are a bit less aggressive, when two main character, a villain and a hero meet each other, it is always nice build up to a movie. At last, I love the ending scene. No spoilers!
